YouTube Thumbnail Not Showing or Not Updating: Causes and Fixes

Your YouTube thumbnail is missing, still showing the old image, or reverted to a frame? The cause is usually processing delay, caching, an A/B test, or a policy takedown — here is how to tell them apart.

You uploaded the new thumbnail, saved, refreshed — and YouTube still shows the old one. Or worse: your custom thumbnail vanished and a random frame took its place. Almost every "my thumbnail is not showing" report comes down to one of five causes, and each has a distinct fix.

1. YouTube is still processing the change

The most common cause is also the most boring one. After you save a new thumbnail, YouTube re-processes and re-distributes the image across its edge servers. For a few minutes — occasionally up to an hour on busy videos — different surfaces show different versions.

What to do: wait 30–60 minutes before concluding anything. Check in an incognito window, which skips your browser cache, and judge by the video's own watch page rather than the Studio preview.

2. Caching is showing you a stale image

You, your browser, and your devices all cache thumbnails aggressively. If the new image appears on one device but not another, or in one surface but not another, it is almost always cache:

  • Hard-refresh the watch page (Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R) or test in an incognito window.
  • On mobile, fully close and reopen the YouTube app — the app's cache is stickier than the browser's.
  • Ask someone else to check, or use a different network. If they see the new thumbnail, the upload worked and your cache is the only problem.

3. An A/B test is serving other thumbnails

If your video uses YouTube's Test & Compare, YouTube deliberately rotates the candidate thumbnails while the test runs, and afterwards keeps serving the winner. During a test, the thumbnail you uploaded is one candidate among several — that is not a bug, and re-uploading mid-test resets your data.

What to do: open the video's Details in Studio and check the Test & Compare section. Either wait for the test to finish, or end the test to lock in the image you want.

4. The custom thumbnail was removed by policy

If your custom thumbnail disappeared and an auto-generated frame took its place, check for two notifications: an email from YouTube and a warning in Studio's Channel Violations page. Thumbnails that violate the community guidelines — sexually suggestive imagery, shocking content, misleading text — get removed without the video itself being touched.

The fix is to upload a compliant replacement. The bar is simple: no sensational thumbnail for a video that does not deliver it, and keep imagery within the guidelines you agreed to.

5. The file itself failed the requirements

YouTube silently falls back to an auto frame when the custom image cannot be used — wrong dimensions, over the 2 MB limit, or an unsupported format. This one is fully preventable: the requirements are 1280×720 minimum, 16:9, under 2 MB, in JPG, GIF, PNG, or BMP.

Run your file through the free thumbnail checker before uploading — it reports exactly which requirement fails. The size guide has the full spec table, and the tester shows how the corrected image reads in real layouts.

A five-minute diagnostic order

  1. Incognito window — is it just your cache?
  2. Studio → Test & Compare — is a test rotating candidates?
  3. Channel violations — did policy remove it?
  4. Checker — does the file meet the requirements?
  5. Wait an hour, then re-check — processing delay?

Working through that list in order resolves nearly every "not showing" report without touching the upload a single extra time.
